This tool estimates the Achilles tendon thickness on ultrasound based on data from a large international database.

Instructions

To estimate normative (median) Achilles tendon thickness with 95% reference interval.

How to use
When to use
Pearls / Pitfalls

The ultrasound probe should be in a transverse position to the tendon with the ankle in maximum dorsiflexion (see Figure 1). First identify the thickest part of the midportion and insertional region of the tendon in the longitudinal plane. Measure the maximum thickness in the transversal plane (Figure 2).

Example of a thickness measurement in the transversal view of the midportion region of the Achilles tendon. First, the largest latero-medial width of the tendon is identified (see light blue line). The largest distance perpendicular to the maximum width is defined as the maximum antero-posterior thickness (see yellow dotted line). See complete instructions and background information:

The reference values provided by this calculator are based on patient characteristics which may help you to improve personalised healthcare.

However, not all patients with clinical diagnostic criteria for Achilles tendinopathy have increased Achilles tendon thickness outside the 95% reference interval.

Achilles Tendon Thickness Tool

The midportion of the Achilles tendon is marked with light blue colour. This is the region between the upper border of the calcaneus and the myotendinous junction.

The insertional region of the Achilles tendon is marked with the dark blue colour. This is the region between the distal tendon insertion on the calcaneus and the upper border of the calcaneus.
